New York State Museum Earth Science Teacher Workshop
Dates: July 9 – 11, 2019 (evening meet-and-greet on July 8)
Location: SUNY New Paltz and surrounding Hudson Valley locations
Fee: $115 (includes educational materials, three lunches, picnic dinner on July 10, and bus transportation on field trip days).
Participants are responsible for breakfasts, dinners, and overnight accommodations.
The workshop provides a three-day, hands-on educational experience for New York State Earth Science/Physical Setting teachers.
Participants are immersed in geology and paleontology for a minimum of 8 hours each day, totaling 24 contact hours of continuing education credit.* The workshop provides an informal setting for learning through interaction between earth science teachers and research experts, through which participants will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of New York-specific topics; refine their observational and interpretive skills; and inquire, formulate, and test their scientific practices and applications.
Two field trips, guided by experts, will help teachers integrate knowledge with real-world geo-paleo experiences and assist them in building better rock, fossil, mineral, and photo collections for use in the classroom.
Two teacher-to-teacher discussion sessions allow participants to collaborate and brainstorm classroom lessons and activities from their own classrooms and from content and knowledge gained during the workshop.
