NYSSLS, Dec. 2016

NYS Science Learning Standards Adopted

UPDATE Board of Regents Adopted New NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards (December 2016)

The Board of Regents recently adopted new New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSP-12SLS)

[SEE: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/mst/sci/documents/p-12-science-learning-standards.pdf] at their December 2016 Board of Regents (BOR) meeting, effective beginning July 1, 2017

You can access the entire item on the Department’s web site at http://www.regents.nysed.gov/node/8503 and
http://www.regents.nysed.gov/common/regents/files/1216p12a1.pdf. These new state science standards are based on the foundation of the National Research Council’s: A Framework for K-12 Science Education; Practices, Cross Cutting Concepts and Core Ideas; and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Included in the BOR item is a timetable for proposed next steps between now and July 1, 2017.

This includes the development of a NY State Comprehensive Science Standards Implementation Plan that pinpoints three phases to address a systematic and systemic transition to new standards based on an alignment to the Statewide Strategic Plan for Science (available at  http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/mst/sci/strplan.html and
http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/mst/sci/documents/Final-Statewide-Strategic-Plan-for-ScienceRev.pdf).

The three phases of the implementation plan are:

Phase I: Initial Transition-Raise Awareness and Capacity Building

Phase II: Transition and Implementation

Phase III: Implementation and Sustainability.

Over the next several months NYSED program staff will continue to work in collaboration with stakeholders across the state to address the goals, objectives, and activities of the Statewide Strategic Plan for Science across six major areas: Standards, Curriculum and Instruction, Professional Development to Enhance Instruction, Materials and Resource Support, and Administrative and Community Support. To that end, the strategic plan will guide the specific phases of implementation in a newly developed NY State Comprehensive Science Standards Implementation Plan, once completed.

Outstanding Teachers Deserve Recognition!

Do you know a teacher that gets students excited about science?

A teacher that goes “above and beyond” because they love teaching and their students?

Nominate them for one of the STANYS Excellence in teaching awards!

We, at STANYS, would like to formally recognize these teachers, those that are doing an outstanding job in meeting todays teaching challenges.  If you have a colleague deserving of recognition for their excellence in science teaching please nominate them, or yourself, for one of our Awards.  If selected, STANYS will present an award of recognition in November at the 2016 STANYS Conference.  We will treat these outstanding professionals with paid registration and lodging to the conference along with an article in our newsletter to honor their accomplishments.

Excellence in Science Teaching Awards honor educators who have inspired students and colleagues at three levels: one at the intermediate level, one high school and one for college instructors.

The is an award to recognize building and/or school district administrators with an outstanding record of promoting staff development and advancing excellence in science education. This award is open to educators or administrators with responsibilities for supervising teachers of science at any grade level.
