New York State Science Honor Society
Background
The first statewide science honor society in the United States is the STANYS-supported New York State Science Honor Society. Established in 1991, it is also endorsed by the New York State Science Supervisors Association and the New York State Assembly.
Its purpose is to encourage an interest and understanding of science and science-related careers, as well as to recognize the academic achievement in science of high school students.
Students who are members are enthused about research, participate in science related activities, have demonstrated achievement in science learning, are service-minded, and present excellent personal character.
Membership Selection
1. First and foremost, it is based upon science scholarship, service, and personal character.
2. Candidates must have successfully completed a minimum of three semesters or equivalent of high school/college science.
3. Ninth graders may be eligible if they have completed a Regents level or accelerated 8th grade science course.
4. Candidates must have a minimum science average of 85% or B+.
5. Candidates must have a minimum scholastic average of 75% or C.
6. Candidates must have two faculty recommendations, at least one of which must be from the science department.
7. Candidates must have shown interest and participated in science or technology related activities.
