Fellows New Teacher Conference Award
The Fellows Endowment Fund, created in 1984, enabled the STANYS Fellowship Committee to establish a conference award for new teachers starting in 1992. The award supports the attendance of a second or third year teacher at the annual STANYS Conference. Room, board (standard double rate), and registration (but not transportation) are covered by this reward.
We are pleased that the fund has been benefiting promising new educators for a number of years. We hope their association with STANYS will continue to be part of a lifelong commitment to professional development.
Fellows New Teacher Conference Award Recipient 2008

Melissa Montauk is in her third year working as an Earth Science teacher at MacArthur High School in Levittown, NY. She joined STANYS over two years ago and has attended many local conferences. She has been the Science Olympiad coach for the past two years and recently implemented a paper-recycling program at her school. These endeavors support the recognition Melissa received from her department chairperson. He noted she relates the earth sciences to world applications and that it is evident her enthusiasm for science is being passed on to her students. In addition, he praised her eagerness to “improve her teaching techniques and introduce fresh ideas to the department.”
