Brian Vorwald

President 2012-2013

I am Brian Vorwald and have the privilege of serving as STANYS President for the 2012-13 academic year.  I have been a member of STANYS since I began my teaching career in 1975, teaching Earth Science in Sayville Public Schools on Long Island.  I retired in 2010 after a rewarding 35 year career during which I also served as Science Department Chairperson for our Middle School and High School.  I’m currently teaching geoscience and atmospheric science courses at Suffolk Community College where I hold the rank of Adjunct Associate Professor of Earth and Space Science.

I’ve worked for STANYS in various leadership positions in the Suffolk Section and am currently co-chairing our Awards Dinner.  I’m a past Earth Science DAL and have served on state-wide STANYS committees.  My STANYS activities helped me to grow as an educator and facilitated working with teachers throughout our state through various professional development opportunities.  STANYS most certainly has enriched my teaching experience.

Through my involvement in curriculum development, test construction for the NY State Education Department, and by working on the NY State Leadership team for the Next Generation Science Standards, I’ve been able to stay current with science education within our state and nation-wide.  So, while I’m now retired from my Sayville career, I’m very much still involved in science education.  Truthfully, I didn’t get the memo on how to be “retired.”  And, this is a good thing!

Just this year, my wife Penny joined me in retirement after a career as a special education teacher and department chair, so we hope to have the opportunity to travel.  We are proud of our two children, Jenna and Scott, who followed us into education.  Jenna is middle school art teacher and Scott teaches elementary and middle school music.
